'We will support the officials just so long as they rightly represent the workers, but we will act independently immediately they misrepresent them.'
Clyde Workers Committee 1915
The Uncivil Servant is a regular bulletin produced by NIPSA members with the aim of linking together struggles and activists. We believe that a network of rank and file activists, organised in their workplaces, is essential if we are to stop Peter Hain's public sector sell-off. However we also believe that it is necessary to be prepared to act independently of the union leadership should they ever propose to sell-out.
Uncivil Servant supporters have organised unofficial strike action against job cuts and low pay, we have organised protests and petitions and have been involved in building solidarity with other workers.
It is becoming increasingly clear that NIPSA members are on the frontline of Peter Hain's attacks on the public sector. From Water Charges and Education Cuts to Workplace 2010 it is NIPSA members who are suffering, however that also means that NIPSA are a obstacle that Hain must get past.
We believe that NIPSA can and must develop a strategy which can stop Hain in his tracks. There is clear opposition to education cuts which means strike action by NIPSA members will get sympathy from other workers if NIPSA asked for it. The idea of paying water charges is despised everywhere, a mass non-payment campaign is what's needed, the fact that none of the main political parties will organise it means that NIPSA and other unions must involve communities in organising the campaign.
The rank and file is the back-bone of all this. If we are well organised we can push forward these campaigns, we can also ensure there is no retreat from the leadership.
If you want to get copies of the bulletin or to get involved with producing it then send us an email.
